Job Prospects
Tourism and Hospitality
With plans to rejuvenate Orchard Road, the transformation of Boat
Quay into a 24-hour precinct, the two integrated resorts and five new
hotel developments over the next three years in Singapore, the
Singapore Tourism Board (STB) wants to triple tourism receipts to
SGD$30 billion and create 100,000 new jobs in 10 years. To achieve
sustainable growth in the tourism industry, there is a new for manpower
in the customer service, tourism and hospitality industry.
Logistics
The logistics industry currently suffers from a misguided
perception that it is a poor industry to develop a successful career
path. There are many career opportunities available at a variety of
levels within logistics which is a message that needs communicating to
potential employees. Vacancies are available in the areas of
procurement, warehousing, transport, documentation and shipping.
Food and Beverage
With the call to improve on Singapore tourism and in keeping with
efforts to retain its world branding of 'Heave of Food', more
investments are being made into the F&B industry. Further, with the
mushrooming of restaurants and food joints, more trained personnel will
be required to accommodate to this industry demand. Job opportunities
are available in various areas for jobseekers that are willing to learn
and pursue a career in this sector.
Halal Food Outlets
As a halal requirement set by the regulatory body, Majlis Ugama
Islam Singapura (MUIS), it is crucial for outlets to place Malay /
Muslim workers at Halal outlets. With the branching of halal food
joints islandwide such as Banquet and Old Chang Kee, more employment
opportunities are available in this sector.
Pre-School
The pre-school years are a critical period in the development of
children. A foundation for our children's future, the pre-school years
determine how children will grow in their schooling years and
contribute to building society in the future. The Ministry of Community
Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) ensures that teachers have to be
trained and certified before teaching. As such vacancies are available
from time to time for trained pre-school teachers.
Cleaning
Raising cleaning standards through skills and technology is an
important mission for the cleaning industry. A common misperception is
that this industry is low end and labour-intensive. However, with the
emergent of new technology, the cleaning industry has stipulated very
stringent requirements that can only be met with special skills and
equipment. There are job opportunities in this sector for individuals
who are willing to learn a new skill and are prepared for a career
switch.
Security Security
and safety issues have become a major concern throughout the world.
This has brought about a transformation of the security industry's
image and the important role it plays in the safety of a nation and its
people. A law has now been passed that with effect from 1 June 2005,
only NSRS-trained security officers can be employed. Training will be
provided to jobseekers that are successful in the job interviews.
Health and Wellness
Growing health consciousness as well as the need to cope with the
stresses of modern day living has seen a meteoric growth in the spa and
wellness industry worldwide. In Singapore, this translates to high
demand for qualified therapists in health and wellness outlets
islandwide.
