SKILLS TRAINING

The Skills Training Unit aims to provide the unemployed Malay/Muslim workforce with necessary skills training to prepare them for employment into the mainstream jobmarket. The unit also aims to provide employed workers who are at risk of being displaced by structural employment with re-skilling opportunities. This unit runs functional skills such as pre-school teaching, enhanced basic security, tourism as well as soft skills such as the Employability Skills System (ESS).

JOB PLUS CENTRE

SENSE's Job Plus Centre offers job matching and job counseling services. Under the job matching services, job seekers are matched to suitable jobs based on their qualifications and experience. This unit attempts to counsel the job seekers to adapt to the new requirements of the economy by having a positive mindset towards a career switch.

Business Development Unit (previously Career Development Unit)

The Business Development Unit looks into projects which benefits the chronically unemployed. These are job seekers who have been unemployed for 6 months or more, are above 40 years of age and may be on financial assistance schemes. The project equips the jobseeker with a skill that can help him supplement his income from other sources. This unit also oversees business opportunities with prospective business partners in expanding collaborative training programmes.

MENDAKI Sense is always on the lookout for new ventures to help the Malay / Muslim workforce to be economically self-sustaining.

Job Prospects

Tourism and Hospitality
With plans to rejuvenate Orchard Road, the transformation of Boat Quay into a 24-hour precinct, the two integrated resorts and five new hotel developments over the next three years in Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) wants to triple tourism receipts to SGD$30 billion and create 100,000 new jobs in 10 years. To achieve sustainable growth in the tourism industry, there is a new for manpower in the customer service, tourism and hospitality industry.

Logistics
The logistics industry currently suffers from a misguided perception that it is a poor industry to develop a successful career path. There are many career opportunities available at a variety of levels within logistics which is a message that needs communicating to potential employees. Vacancies are available in the areas of procurement, warehousing, transport, documentation and shipping.

Food and Beverage
With the call to improve on Singapore tourism and in keeping with efforts to retain its world branding of 'Heave of Food', more investments are being made into the F&B industry. Further, with the mushrooming of restaurants and food joints, more trained personnel will be required to accommodate to this industry demand. Job opportunities are available in various areas for jobseekers that are willing to learn and pursue a career in this sector.

Halal Food Outlets
As a halal requirement set by the regulatory body, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), it is crucial for outlets to place Malay / Muslim workers at Halal outlets. With the branching of halal food joints islandwide such as Banquet and Old Chang Kee, more employment opportunities are available in this sector.

Pre-School
The pre-school years are a critical period in the development of children. A foundation for our children's future, the pre-school years determine how children will grow in their schooling years and contribute to building society in the future. The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) ensures that teachers have to be trained and certified before teaching. As such vacancies are available from time to time for trained pre-school teachers.

Cleaning
Raising cleaning standards through skills and technology is an important mission for the cleaning industry. A common misperception is that this industry is low end and labour-intensive. However, with the emergent of new technology, the cleaning industry has stipulated very stringent requirements that can only be met with special skills and equipment. There are job opportunities in this sector for individuals who are willing to learn a new skill and are prepared for a career switch.

Security
Security and safety issues have become a major concern throughout the world. This has brought about a transformation of the security industry's image and the important role it plays in the safety of a nation and its people. A law has now been passed that with effect from 1 June 2005, only NSRS-trained security officers can be employed. Training will be provided to jobseekers that are successful in the job interviews.

Health and Wellness
Growing health consciousness as well as the need to cope with the stresses of modern day living has seen a meteoric growth in the spa and wellness industry worldwide. In Singapore, this translates to high demand for qualified therapists in health and wellness outlets islandwide.
