The Number Board Game with Bottle Caps is one of the numeracy activities that KelasMateMatika @ Community Centre (KMM@CC) offers to parents with preschool children aged 4 to 6 years old. It comes in a portable PlayKit that equips children with activities to learn and bond through play at any time and place. “We found out about KMM@CC when Asyifa was in kindergarten 1. Her teacher was the one who recommended us to enrol Asyifa in KMM@CC. Since it’s a parent-child workshop, I thought why not give it a try,” shared Mdm Solihah as she recalled her experience enrolling in KMM in November 2019. At KMM@CC, Mdm Solihah and Mr Iqbal were equipped with Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) skills so that they are more confident to teach their children basic numeracy skills while Asyifa participated in interactive activities hosted by the facilitators. Subsequently, both parents and children would come together and connect through play. From a game of tag to colouring, these activities became an effective tool in building relationships and learning basic numeracy concept between parents and children. On top of family bonding, KMM@CC also helps to build children’s self-confidence and communication skills as well as enhance their numeracy knowledge. In 2021, MENDAKI piloted Kelas Siap Sekolah (KSS) programme, which provides further support to children after they had undergone the KMM programme by developing their problem-solving skills and strengthening their foundation in literacy and numeracy concepts, To further strengthen Asyifa’s skills and prepare her for Primary 1, Mdm Solihah promptly registered her for the first intake of KSS in June 2021. Mdm Solihah was delighted to see Asyifa’s progress at home and in school. “Our eldest can apply her newfound knowledge in her daily life such as counting coins, and I’m proud of that. I am thankful that she is not in the Learning Support Programme at school, and she could solve Mathematical problems at home with minimal guidance!” exclaimed Mdm Solihah. 26
