CELEBRATING SUCCESS IN DIVERSE FIELDS EYE FOR SUCCESS AMIRUL SUFYAN BIN MOHAMED SALLEH Amirul Sufyan believes in the importance of collaboration and building relationships. He is always looking for opportunities to bring people together in pursuit of the greater good. “The skills and knowledge that I acquired are for me to give back to the community,” said the recipient of the inaugural Anugerah Gemilang and top graduate of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Optometry school. The award aims at promoting the desired qualities of a Community of Success – character, competency and citizenry. He played a key role in bringing students from different courses who shared a keen interest in Malay culture together by organising various cultural activities. His love for Malay culture also saw him being involved in a student-led production at the Arts Fiesta held at the Malay Heritage Centre. As a member of the Health Science Society, he was part of the planning team that created platforms for students from the nursing and optometry faculties to build camaraderie and strengthen their bond. He was also responsible for organising the polytechnic’s first ever collaborative inter-school society event, bringing students from the various schools together. Despite his active involvement in co-curricular activities, Amirul managed to carve his name on the Director’s List twice and received the Johnson & Johnson Vision Singapore Silver Medal & Prize. With a heart in helping others, he also participated in his school’s Youth Expedition Project to Cambodia, providing free eye screening, glasses and sunglasses to the village children. “The gratitude shown by the villagers after getting their eyes screened left me with a great sense of satisfaction. I’m really glad I’m able to help them in little ways like this,” added the Tertiary Tuition Fee Subsidy recipient for his education in the polytechnic. Amirul’s servitude and leadership skills had created opportunities for others to bond, collaborate and benefit from the experience.
