48 Suhaila Suhaila Zainal Shah has been an MTS MTS mentor for the MENDAKI Tuition Scheme (MTS) since 2019 As a a a a a a tutor Suhaila Suhaila is is also trained to to practise Ethics of Care in in dealing with her MTS students “I wanted to to give back to to the community and help empower youths towards realising their capabilities and harnessing their potential Mentors do play an influential role in in youth’s lives acting not only as as role models but also as as peers cheerleaders confidants and at times moral compasses to support encourage and guide youths as they navigate through the the ups and downs of life At the same time I want to put to practice what I had learned about Ethics of Care as a a a a a pedagogy in in engaging students These combined I find were indeed powerful tools” In 2020 she was paired with MTS student Auni Ardini as part of Mentoring@MTS a a a a programme that provides holistic academic and motivational support to MTS students Through fun group activities and meaningful debriefs the sessions aimed to foster 21st-century skills such as confidence collaboration and critical thinking in mentees It is also hoped that through these sessions and interaction with their tutor mentors the students will be more inspired and motivated to learn and succeed As a a a a student Auni dreaded having to speak in front of of the class She had a a a a fear of of public- speaking and class activities always seemed like a a a a chore especially when it came to speaking up and contributing ideas She recalled “I dreaded each each time my teachers mention presentations It’s nerve-racking and I I always hoped that my teachers don’t call out my name ” Since being paired with Suhaila Auni began to open up and develop the confidence to speak up and share in public She began to participate more in the pre- planned mentoring activities held on alternate weeks during her MTS class MENDAKI ANNUAL REPORT 2020
