Special Malay Bursary – University

Before 1995, the Public Service Commission (PSC) administered the Special Malay Bursary (SMB) for Malay students studying in the local tertiary institutions. In 1995, MENDAKI took over the administration of the SMB.


Application Period

13 May 2026 – 15 Jul 2026 (Academic Year : Aug 26 - May 27)


Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Special Malay Bursary (SMB), applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Malay Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident(PR).
  2. Pursuing first-year studies in a full-time University degree course offered by any of the following six local Universities:
    1. National University of Singapore (NUS)
    2. Nanyang Technological University of Singapore/National Institute of Education
      (NTU/NIE)
    3. Singapore Management University (SMU)
    4. Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)
    5. Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)
    6. Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)
  3. Have a gross household Per Capita Income (PCI) of S$1000 and below.
  4. Obtained outstanding results in:
    1. GCE A-Level examinations preferably with 3 distinctions or
    2. Polytechnic Diploma with a Certificate of Merit or
    3. International Baccalaureate
  5. Possess good records of active participation in co-curricular activities (CCA).
  6. Applicants must be in receipt of the MENDAKI Tertiary Tuition Fee Subsidy (TTFS) scheme. You may apply your TTFS application here.


Value of Award

An annual living allowance of $3,400 for the duration of the course of study subject to satisfactory academic performance.

  1. Total number of Awards = 5
  2. Quantum : $3,400 per year
  3. CGPA cut-off for 2nd & subsequent year students : 3/5


Terms and Conditions

  1. Priority will be given to applicants from low-income families.
  2. Only complete applications with all mandatory documents provided will be processed. Applications that do not fulfill the eligibility requirements will be rejected.
  3. Applicants will be shortlisted based on a competitive evaluation among eligible applicants. Do note that fulfilling the eligibility requirements does not automatically result in an award.
  4. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
  5. The Bursary is intended to support the recipient’s educational expenses such as tuition fees, course materials, living expenses and fees for fees for institution-organised educational activities.
  6. Recipients MUST maintain a minimum cGPA of 3/5 throughout their course of study.
  7. Recipients are required to submit a copy of their examination results to MENDAKI annually before the funds can be disbursed.


Mandatory Documents Required for Your Application

  1. Applicant’s most recent academic transcript clearly indicating their:
    1. Full Name
    2. Name of Course & Level
    3. Subject Score or CGPA
  1. Proof of student confirmation into Institution clearly indicating:
    1. Full Name
    2. Name of Course
    3. Commencement Date
  2. In no more than 150 words, share your achievements & outline your goals for the next 5 & 10 years. Please submit your response in MS Word format.
  3. Other supporting Documents if any.


Application Procedure

  1. All applications must be submitted online.
  2. Processing will take up to 4 weeks.
  3. Shortlisted applicants will be notified.

NOTE : MENDAKI’s decision on the outcome of all applications shall be final and not subject to further review or appeal.
