Special Malay Bursary, Polytechnic

Before 1995, the Public Service Commission (PSC) administered the Special Malay Bursary (SMB) for Malay students studying in the local tertiary institutions. In 1995, MENDAKI took over the administration of the SMB.


Application Period

25 Feb 2026 – 30 Apr 2026 (Academic Year : Apr 26 - Feb 27)


Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Special Malay Bursary (SMB), applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Malay Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident.
  2. Pursuing first-year studies in a full-time Polytechnic course offered by any of the following five local Polytechnics:
    1. Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP)
    2. Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP)
    3. Republic Polytechnic (RP)
    4. Singapore Polytechnic (SP)
    5. Temasek Polytechnic (TP)
  3. Have a gross household Per Capita Income (PCI) of S$1000 and below.
  4. Obtained outstanding results in:
    1. Singapore Cambridge GCE O-Level or GCE A-Level examinations, preferably with 3 distinctions or
    2. NITEC or Higher NITEC with cumulative GPA score of 3.5 and above.
  5. Possess good records of active participation in co-curricular activities (CCA).
  6. Applicants must be a recipient of MENDAKI Tertiary Tuition Fee Subsidy (TTFS) scheme. You may apply your TTFS application here.


Value of Award

An annual living allowance of $1,700 is offered to first-year students, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

CGPA cut-off for 2nd & subsequent year students: 2.5/4


Terms and Conditions

  1. Priority will be given to applicants from low-income families.
  2. Only complete applications with all mandatory documents provided will be processed. Applications that do not fulfill the eligibility requirements will be rejected.
  3. Applicants will be shortlisted based on a competitive evaluation among eligible applicants. Do note that fulfilling the eligibility requirements does not automatically result in an award.
  4. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
  5. The Bursary is intended to support the recipient’s educational expenses such as tuition fees, course materials, living expenses and fees for institution-organised educational activities.
  6. Successful applicants MUST maintain a minimum cGPA of 2.5/4 throughout their entire duration course of study.
  7. Recipients are required to submit a copy of their examination results to MENDAKI annually before the funds can be disbursed.


Mandatory Documents Required for Your Application

  1. Applicant’s latest academic transcript results clearly indicating:
    1. Full Name
    2. Name of Course & Level and
    3. Subject Score or CGPA
  2. Proof of student confirmation into Institution clearly indicating:
    1. Full Name
    2. Name of Course and
    3. Commencement Date
  3. In no more than 250 words, share your achievements & outline your goals for the next 5 & 10 years.
  4. Other supporting documents if any.


Application Procedure

  1. All applications must be submitted online.
  2. Processing will take up to 4 weeks.
  3. Shortlisted applicants will be notified.

NOTE : MENDAKI’s decision on the outcome of all applications shall be final and not subject to further review or appeal.
