Congratulations to our Special Achievement Award 2016 Recipients!
Special Achievement Award (Non-Academic) this year saw the highest number of recipients since its inception in 2008. This award is given to students between the ages of 12 and 18 who have done exceedingly well in a non-academic discipline at a local and/or an internationally recognised competition and/or who successfully broke a national record. However this year (2016), the award is specially extended to athletes who have done well by representing Singapore at the Rio Games.
Congratulations to our Anugerah MENDAKI & Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award 2016 recipients!
This year, MENDAKI is proud to present the Anugerah MENDAKI and Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award to the highest number of recipients. Anugerah MENDAKI was introduced in 1982 to reward and recognise Muslim students who have done exceptionally well in the national examinations and emerged in the top 10 per cent of the national cohort. The Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award was introduced in February 2005 in honour of the then-Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. It is given to students who display potential in areas beyond academic such as culinary, sports, music, design and creative industries, literary, and performing and visual arts.
MENDAKI Celebrates 35 Years of Community Excellence
The Malays contributed to the miracle transformation of Singapore’s economy. The rapid development and urbanisation led some segments of the community to experience a sense of displacement. As Singapore continued to progress, the fear that these would lagged behind, was very real. On 28 May 1982, the Singapore Convention Hall witnessed an important milestone in the history of the Malays. Arising from the theme of the Congress, the importance of education, a consensus was forged to own the challenges faced by the community and tackled it together. The task was entrusted to MENDAKI - Singapore’s first Self-Help Group. Since then, the progress shown by Malay students in national examinations showed that MENDAKI’s efforts have created a positive impact. At every level of the education strata, Malay students made significant improvements. While there are still gaps when compared to the rest, these are getting narrower. The progress in education acts as a boost to the Malay socio-economic well-being.
