If you are a final year tertiary student, you may be thinking “what will I do after my very last final exams are over?” Indeed, the transition from school to work may be a challenging leap. Thus, it is important to be prepared, as you embark on a new chapter in life. Here are some tips to help you be on the ball when it comes to job hunting! For those who are still in school, these tips may also be relevant in the years to come. Wherever you may be in life, we wish you all the very best!

1. Curate your resume with the potential employer in mind

Your resume should show that you are fit for the job. Streamline and customise your resume so that it highlights necessary achievements and important skillsets which would be useful for the position you are applying for.

2. Dress for the occasion

First impression matters! It is important not to underdress or overdress. Outfits depend on the job you are applying for. If you are intending to apply for an office job, it may be more appropriate to wear collared shirts, long pants and covered shoes. Jeans and sneakers may only be apt for casual jobs which, for instance, require you to be outdoors most of the time.

3. Do your research about the company

Finding out more about the company or organisation ensures that you are making an informed decision about the position you are applying for. This will also help you feel prepared if the interviewer asks you to display your knowledge of the company.

4. Know your goals

Before you send your job applications, spend some time reflecting on what you really want to do. Weigh the pros and cons of working in the company and have a game plan for your own personal development. Being clear in your objectives also helps answer common questions such as “why do you want this job?” and “where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?”

5. Have a set of questions to ask

This is a wonderful opportunity to clarify any doubts and know more about the company! Career progression, training opportunities and current projects are among the questions you can consider asking if relevant to you.
